In short: Select an element and set its In, Out and Loop animations separately.
The ✨ Animate button does this for a whole design at once. Doing it by hand is for when you want a particular element to behave a particular way.
Each element has three independent slots, which is the bit worth understanding before you start.
In, Out and Loop
Entrance, exit and something that runs continuously in between. They are separate, so an element can slide in, pulse while it is on screen and fade out.
The general ones
Slide, fade, blur, grow, zoom, pop, wipe, spin and pan work on anything. Ken Burns is the slow push on a still image that stops a photograph looking frozen.
The loops
Spin, fade, blur, pulsating, breathing, jump, squeeze, sway and scale. One looping element on screen reads as alive; three reads as a broken website.
Text has its own
Typewriter, block swipe, spread and merge. Typewriter has two settings, Duration and Writing Style, and Writing Style reveals the line either a character or a word at a time.
Easing is where it starts to look intentional
Linear motion looks mechanical. Ease out for entrances, ease in for exits, and the back and spring easings when you want something to feel bouncy.
Entrances and exits cannot overlap, so if a clip is too short for both the editor will hold them apart rather than let them collide.
