In short: Double-click an image to crop it. The fill mode decides everything else.
Most images that look wrong in a layout are not badly cropped, they are in the wrong fill mode.
Crop, Cover, Fit
Fill Mode holds the three. Crop lets you position the image inside a fixed frame. Cover fills the frame and loses the overflow. Fit shows the whole image and leaves space. Cover is right most of the time; Fit is right when nothing may be lost, like a product shot.
Alignment within the frame
In Cover and Fit you choose which part is anchored, so a subject on the left stays on the left rather than being centred out of frame.
Straighten
A slider for a horizon that is a degree off, which is a different job from rotating the block.
Aspect presets
Free, original, square, portrait, landscape and the rest, so the crop matches the format you are heading for.
Flip the content, not the block
Flipping the crop content mirrors the photograph inside its frame; flipping the block mirrors the whole element. They are different operations.
If a crop leaves an empty edge after a rotation, adjusting the crop to fill the frame is the fix.
