In short: Double-click an image to open Crop → Fill Mode. Set it to Cover or Fit first.
When an image looks wrong in a layout, it is usually in the wrong fill mode, not badly cropped. The fill mode decides whether the image fills its frame, fits inside it, or shows the part you choose.
Open the crop tools
Double-click the image. The crop controls open in the panel.
Choose the fill mode
Fill Mode has three options. Crop lets you move and scale the image inside a fixed frame. Cover fills the frame and hides the overflow. Fit shows the whole image and leaves space around it. Use Cover for most photos. Use Fit when nothing may be cut off, such as a product shot.
Anchor the important part
In Cover and Fit, Alignment sets which part of the image stays in view. Choose Center Left to keep a subject on the left, for example.
Straighten a tilted horizon
Drag Straighten to level an image that is a degree or two off. This is separate from rotating the whole element.
Match a format
Aspect Ratio holds presets for the crop shape. Pick the one that matches where the design is going.
Flip the image inside its frame
Flip in the crop tools mirrors the image inside its frame. Flip in the transform tools mirrors the whole element. They are different.
If a rotation leaves an empty corner, raise Scale a little inside the crop until the frame is full.
